Our Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) Program offers internship, residency and supervisory opportunities to expand our studies. Below you’ll find detailed information and requirements for each program, including costs, prerequisites and other necessities to enroll in our program.
CPE internships
These requirements apply to both our summer internship and extended internship program. After you’re accepted into our internship program, one of our team members will contact you by email about orientation and completing requirements.
Some requirements may have a cost or fee that you’ll need to pay. Please submit all required items as quickly as possible. All requirements must be completed at least one month before your internship start date.
Required education to complete
- material safety data sheet education
- review Code of Conduct
- review program handbook
- acknowledge receipt of program handbook
- skills competency review (online test)
- submit vehicle registration information
- complete background consent for child protective services law
- provide copy of photo identification
- provide information for mandatory health status documentation (may have fees)
- complete state background, child abuse and FBI clearances (may have fees)
Fees for required items will vary depending on immunizations, drug screenings and background checks needed.

CPE residency
Our residency program is one year in length and begins and ends in August. Residents will receive a stipend and benefits as part of the program, including:
- annual stipend of $40,000
- full-time work schedule
- eligibility for employee benefits
- meals provided at no cost
- eligibility for Level I or Level II CPE curriculum
Our residency program is based at WellSpan York Hospital and is led by the Reverend Peter Kuhn, Association for Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE) certified educator.
Summer internship CPE program
Our summer CPE Program begins in May and continues through August. It’s based at WellSpan Gettysburg Hospital and may include opportunities at several other locations. It’s led by the Very Reverend Vasyl E. Marchak, PhD, MDiv, MTh, MBA, MHA, BCC-E.
The tuition cost for our summer CPE Program is $450. Additional internship requirements and fees include:
- full-time work schedule
- meals provided at no cost
- eligibility for Level I or Level II CPE curriculum
Extended internship CPE program – York
Our extended CPE Program begins in October and continues through April. This program is based at WellSpan York Hospital and is led by the Reverend Peter Kuhn, ACPE certified educator.
